Let's Dress Your Pet in Halloween?

Halloween can be fun for people as we celebrate the fall and transition into the colder months of the year. However, animals can become very stressed with the unusual sights, sounds, and smells of the holiday. Not only can it be frightening for the family pets, but it can also be dangerous. Many candies can be toxic to animals, pet costumes can range from uncomfortable to unsafe, and decorations might tempt our pets and expose them to something harmful. We recognize that animals are individuals, so while you while enjoy the festivities, consider it from your pet’s perspective:

“A dog’s natural instinct is to protect their home or to alert you that a stranger has arrived,” reminds Amy Nichols, Vice President of Companion Animals and Equine Protection at the Humane Society of the United States. “And cats typically prefer a quiet environment with their family. Trick-or-treaters continually knocking on the door or ringing the bell can be very stressful to both dogs and cats.”

Prepare in advance

Give your pet a chance to experience these new sights and smells before Halloween night. Expose them to your costume and Halloween décor, especially ones that move and make noise. Remember to have treats handy to make the experience positive for your pet.

Pet Costumes Are Cute, But Can Be Dangerous

Yes, your dog looks adorable dressed as a red and black ladybug—and your cat has a positively disgusted look on its face when you put those pointed ears on its head. As cute as they are, however, costumes are not right for every pet.

Costumes need to fit properly without restricting movement, causing trouble breathing, or rubbing anywhere that might cause bare spots or sores. Pets can’t tell us what is bothering them about a costume and may simply react by wanting it off. Signs they are uncomfortable may include having their head and tail down or attempting to remove the costume by pawing at it.In the process, they may chew off and ingest a portion of the costume, which may cause intestinal obstructions or other emergency conditions.

If you want to put a costume on your pet, make sure it fits properly, and then supervise your pet the entire time it wears the costume. Leave it on for as short period of time (taking some cute photos to share with friends and family) and then remove the costume before it makes your pet too uncomfortable or winds up with costume fragments in its stomach.

Check the costume carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard. Ill-fitting outfits can get twisted on external objects or your pet, leading to injury. Be sure to have your pet try on the costume before the big night. If he or she seems distressed or shows abnormal behavior, consider letting your pet wear his or her “birthday suit” or a festive bandana instead.

Other considerations before Halloween:

To avoid stress in dogs, take them for walkies before it goes dark. Trick-or-treaters in costume and loud music from parties can be scary for our pets, so it’s best to be at home with them before Halloween activities start.

For cats, encourage them to come home earlier by moving their dinner time to before it gets dark outside. And make sure you have beds and litter trays if you’re shutting the cat flap for the evening.

Those tempting bowls of candy are seemingly everywhere during the season. While these bowls of candy may simply be tempting to you, they can be dangerous for your pets. If you think they might have ingested any candy, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Close the curtains and windows if there’s lots of noise outside. If your pet seems worried or anxious, it might be better to avoid going out and leaving them alone. Instead, why not snuggle up for a spooky movie night with them instead?

A fun night does not have to be spooky

If you are devoted to your pet the same way we are, you can switch from a spooky night to a fun one! For instance start teaching a new trick to your dog, let´s say down. Make sure your dog knows it properly. When the magic night comes leave a note outside with a dog treat bowl and instructions for this special trick or treat moment. Your dog will be excited by whoevercomes at the door and it will be super fun for both, your fur friend and most children!

Some easy tricks can be:

  • Sit

  • Down

  • Paw

  • Spin

  • Touch

Special night special treats

You don’t need to show us a trick to get this treat of an idea. A ‘witches brew’ for dogs.

After you have hollowed out a pumpkin, take the flesh, bake it, and puree it. You can pour this over your dog’s meals for an extra special treat. You can even freeze it and store it for special occasions throughout the year.

It’s incredibly healthy, and your pet will love it.
